Human Rights Group Calls for Probe into Alleged Police Brutality in Nador, Morocco

The section of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH) in the city of Nador is calling for the opening of a transparent and impartial judicial and administrative investigation into the physical and verbal assault suffered by an individual during his custody.

The facts took place within the Royal Gendarmerie of the center of the commune of Arkman. In a complaint filed with the public prosecutor’s office, T. Ch. claims to have been the victim of physical and verbal assault by the deputy commander of the territorial brigade of the Royal Gendarmerie of the center of the commune of Arekmane, in Nador. During the custody period, which lasted from Saturday, January 4 to the morning of Monday, January 6, the gendarmerie officer inflicted severe violence on the person concerned inside the gendarmerie station in Arekmane, specified the section of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH) of the city of Nador, which holds a copy of the complaint.

Slapping, insults attacking his dignity, including insults and attacks on the honor of his father, prohibition of contacting the members of his family so that they can bring him the medication he has been taking daily for five years under medical supervision. T. Ch. lived a nightmare during his custody. The Nador section of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights has, in a statement, condemned what it described as "the continuation of the suffering of citizens due to such practices committed by some officials responsible for law enforcement in certain gendarmerie stations".

The section has asked the regional commander of the Royal Gendarmerie of Nador to ensure respect for the dignity of citizens during the investigation and custody phase, in accordance with national legislation and international conventions ratified by Morocco. It has also called on the judicial authorities and the administration of the Royal Gendarmerie to open a transparent and impartial judicial and administrative investigation into this case. It also demands the application of legal and administrative sanctions against any person found guilty of these violations.
