Houthi Rebels Welcome Morocco’s Withdrawal from Yemen Conflict

Tuesday 12 February 2019, by Amine

Morocco’s cessation of all military participation in Yemen has been viewed very favorably by the Houthis, who see it as a good start towards the end of all hostilities. And that’s not all... The Houthis even thanked Morocco.

A telegram has just been addressed to the Moroccan Head of Government Saadeddine El Othmani by the Houthi rebels, thanking Morocco for withdrawing its troops from Yemen. According to the Yemeni agency Saba, Abdel Aziz ben Habtour, the Prime Minister of the Houthi rebel administration, declared that the Moroccan decision to suspend its participation alongside the Arab coalition in Yemen is "positive".

Ben Habtour also stressed in his telegram to El Othmani "the importance and positive impact of this decision on the relations between Yemen and Morocco". This new Moroccan position has even been described as "proof of the absurd nature of this aggression".

Finally, the Prime Minister of the Houthi rebel administration indicated that "this responsible decision" to withdraw from the Arab coalition in Yemen will greatly contribute to the cessation of hostilities, with Morocco remaining a regional and international player enjoying good recognition.

It should be noted that the humanitarian situation in Yemen is described by the UN as the "worst humanitarian crisis in the world". The last death toll from the conflict, dating back to 2016, was 10,000.
