Houthi Leader Slams Morocco's Ties with Israel, Praises Anti-Normalization Protests

Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, the leader of the Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen, has harshly criticized Morocco’s position on the Palestinian cause. He also praised the Moroccans who are expressing their opposition to the normalization of relations between the kingdom and Israel.

In a speech broadcast by the Houthi-affiliated channel on Thursday, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi accused Morocco of being a "collaborator, traitor and accomplice of the Israeli enemy." He accuses the kingdom of having increased its economic partnership with Israel. Referring to Morocco’s position on the Palestinian cause, he presents the Moroccan government as being at odds with the feelings and aspirations of the Arab and Muslim community as a whole. The Houthi leader says he is disappointed with what he described as a significant gap between the actions of the Moroccan government and the values of Islam and the Quran. He also noted that there was a clear distinction between the policy of the Moroccan government and the feelings of the Moroccan people, and praised the persistent resistance of Moroccans to the normalization of relations between Morocco and Israel, as well as the existence of an "ongoing movement" in the country in favor of the Palestinian cause.

Historically, Morocco has always openly supported the Palestinian cause and has shown its commitment to the rights of the Palestinians. Since the outbreak of the war between Hamas and Israel in October 2023, King Mohammed VI, who chairs the Al-Quds Committee, has repeatedly called for a ceasefire. The kingdom has also sent humanitarian aid to Gaza, including food, water and medicine. In July, the Moroccan sovereign, in his Throne speech, stressed the need for a genuine solution to the Palestinian crisis, advocating for a two-state solution, with Gaza as part of an independent Palestinian state and East Jerusalem as its capital.
