Housing assistance in Morocco: a program popular with Moroccans living abroad

Moroccans living abroad (MRE) play an important role in the success of the direct housing assistance program, according to Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, Minister of National Land Use Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and City Policy.
As of November 5th, 28,458 people have benefited from this scheme, a quarter of whom are Moroccans living abroad (MRE). The State has contributed 2.3 billion dirhams, or 20% of the total value of the acquired housing, which amounts to 11.4 billion dirhams.
More than 111,000 aid applications have been filed, 41% of which are from women and 37% from young people under 35. MREs represent 22% of the applicants.
Morocco, which has 365 cities and urban centers, should reach an urbanization rate of 65% by 2025. A national strategy has been put in place to make intermediate cities a driver of regional economic development. An index has identified 71 cities meeting these criteria.
In rural areas, 12 new emerging rural centers will be added in 2025 to the National Integrated Development Program. This program has already identified 542 centers.
The fight against slum housing continues. Between January and the end of September 2024, the living conditions of 7,685 families were improved. Ongoing projects aim to help more than 69,000 additional families. The annual rate of housing improvement has increased sharply, from 6,200 families between 2018 and 2021 to 16,300 families under the current government.
