Historic Meknes Medina to Undergo $80 Million Restoration Project

Rehabilitation and enhancement work on the Medina of Meknes will likely start in three months. This is, at least, what the Prefectural Tourism Council (CPT) of Meknes announced during a meeting with the International Federation of Tourism Journalists and Writers (FIJET).
The Ministries of the Interior, Housing, Culture, the Fez-Meknes region and the municipal council of Meknes have already signed a convention relating to the rehabilitation and enhancement of monuments over the period 2020 to 2023, La Vie éco reports.
The work required the mobilization of a budget envelope of 800 MDH. The project revolves around three main axes. These are the rehabilitation and enhancement of the historical heritage of the Medina (594 MDH), the improvement of accessibility and circulation in the Medina (40 MDH for the construction of 3 parking lots) and the improvement of tourist and economic attractiveness (rehabilitation of foundouks and kissariats, tourist circuits and local infrastructure (166 MDH).
In charge, the Agency for the Development and Rehabilitation of the Medina of Fez (ADER-Fès) as the delegated project owner. "With its expertise acquired since 1981, when the Medina of Fez was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, ADER has been chosen to oversee these projects. ADER experts begin by verifying the terms of reference," said Mohamed Saji, director of the Meknes CPT. "In any case, the work should start in 2 to 3 months. The goal is to complete the projects by the deadline in 2023".
