Health Alert: Brazilian Hair Straightening Linked to Kidney Failure in France

The National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (Anses) has recently issued an alert regarding the use of "Brazilian straightening" products containing glyoxylic acid, a cosmetic ingredient considered potentially toxic to the kidneys.
Since the beginning of the year, four cases of acute kidney failure have been reported in France following the use of these products, including a woman still hospitalized. Brazilian straightening is also very popular in Morocco.
This practice, very widespread in France, is also experiencing strong enthusiasm in Morocco, where "Brazilian straightening" is commonly offered in hair salons. The Ministry of Health recommends, pending the results of a thorough investigation by the end of the year, temporarily suspending their use, both by professionals and individuals.
Hair products are not the first to be called into question, with several of them regularly denounced for the presence of potentially dangerous substances, such as allergens, irritants or endocrine disruptors. These components can be absorbed through the scalp and enter the bloodstream.
Pending further clarification on glyoxylic acid, it is recommended to favor alternatives to complex formulations. For example, for shampoos, it is often recommended to choose products containing fewer ingredients and to avoid parabens and sulfates. For care products, vegetable oils can replace conditioners or masks, depending on the hair needs. A rinse with diluted apple cider vinegar is also a frequently used option to naturally add shine.
As for hair coloring, plant-based versions are often recommended, although it is necessary to wait a certain time between the use of chemical colorations and the switch to plant-based to avoid undesirable reactions. However, for people wishing to lighten their hair, only chemical colorations remain effective.
