Glovo to Employ Delivery Riders in Spain Following Labor Law Changes

In Spain, Glovo, the mobile app-based food delivery company, also present in Morocco, has been forced to comply with labor law.
Good news for Glovo couriers in Spain. In a statement, its majority shareholder, the German group Delivery Hero, announced that the management of the Spanish company "has decided to move from a" business model based on "independent contractors to a model based on employment for its providers in Spain." In other words, the Spanish home delivery platform will now employ its couriers in Spain, who had previously worked under the status of independent contractors. A decision motivated by Glovo’s desire to end the "legal uncertainty" surrounding its activities. It was locked in a tug-of-war with the Spanish authorities over the non-compliance with labor law.
The German group will also specify that this "change in the operational model" will be "limited to Glovo’s activities in Spain" and "should have an impact of around 100 million euros" on the company’s gross operating income "for the 2025 fiscal year." It remains to be seen whether the Spanish company will extend the measure to its couriers in Morocco.
