Global Cereal Prices Surge 41%, Driving Up Bread Costs in Morocco

The surge in bread prices in Morocco would be the direct consequence of the global market situation according to FAO experts. Here are some explanations.
It is disapproval and indignation among Moroccans who have been powerlessly witnessing the rise in bread prices in recent weeks.
To explain the situation, the UN agency mentioned the increase in world food prices, specifying that last month, cereal prices jumped 41% compared to 2020.
In this regard, Abdolreza Abbassian, Senior Economist at the FAO, indicated that even if "the global cereal production in 2021 is expected to reach 2,800 million tons, a historic record, it will not be enough to meet the expected consumption needs for the 2021-2022 marketing year, according to the new FAO forecasts".
A situation that will undoubtedly have repercussions on Morocco, a major importer of wheat but also a major consumer due to domestic demand. For now, consumers are wondering if the already criticized price of bread will rise further. Will bakeries pass on this inflation to this basic food?
However, the price of bread made from soft wheat has remained the same, since the State, through the Compensation Fund, covers the difference in case of price increases.
