Gad Elmaleh Slams French Response to Morocco Earthquake Aid Controversy

Moroccan comedian Gad Elmaleh expressed his anger about the controversy over French aid to Morocco, hit by a violent earthquake on the night of Friday, September 8 to Saturday.

"I think we should be more inspired by Moroccan solidarity than receive lessons on how to live. I’m not angry, but I believe this is not the time for debate. And I hear a lot of comments on how Morocco should behave," said Gad Elmaleh, a guest on the C l’hebdo show, broadcast on France 5 and presented by Aurélie Casse.

The day after the powerful earthquake that killed nearly 3,000 people and injured 5,530, the French president assured that France is ready to "intervene" to help Morocco "in a second" where the Moroccan authorities request it, but Rabat has not requested its aid. This gives rise to a controversy over a possible rejection of French aid by Morocco, which has so far only accepted aid from Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Spain and the United Kingdom. In a video posted on X on Tuesday, Emmanuel Macron wished that "all the controversies that come to divide, that come to complicate things in this moment that is already so tragic, can be silenced out of respect for everyone."

To help the victims, Gad Elmaleh, who will be on the bill of the "Solidarity Show Morocco", which will take place on October 2, 2023 at the Dôme de Paris in France, announced that all the proceeds will be donated to the Fund No. 126, created following the instructions of King Mohammed VI as part of the efforts made to combat the effects of the devastating earthquake. "There is psychological, mental, emotional, patriotic support, whatever you want, but there needs to be money for them (the inhabitants of Morocco: editor’s note) to get back on their feet," the Moroccan comedian specified to Ouest France.
