Fundraiser Launched to Repatriate Young Moroccan Immigrant's Body from Spain

The lifeless body of Yassir, a 19-year-old Moroccan who lived in Eibar, was found on Thursday, February 11 in an abandoned factory in Hernani. It will be repatriated to Morocco thanks to a solidarity fundraising campaign initiated by a group of friends.

For those who knew him, Yassir, who lived in a rented room in Eibar, "was a cheerful and kind boy who left Morocco for a better life and to support his family." After his death, the legal procedure to repatriate his body to Tangier, his hometown, was initiated. Unfortunately, Yassir had no insurance, and his family, destitute and without financial resources, does not have the means to cover the expenses related to the repatriation of his remains. To help the family obtain the necessary funds, Jaouad, a 35-year-old Moroccan who has lived in Deba since 2006, launched a solidarity fundraising campaign on Friday with other friends.

Four days after the launch of this initiative, the necessary amount was collected. "We are not an association or an organization. We are just Yassir’s friends, some close and others more distant," said Jaouad, for whom the outpouring of solidarity was natural and spontaneous. "I would have done the same thing if it had been a stranger. He didn’t need to be our friend," he added.

The initiative made it possible to raise more money than was needed for the repatriation. "Part of what remains will go to Yassir’s family. The other part will be saved to help families who find themselves in the same situation," said Jaouad, who did not fail to praise the decisive collaboration of the Tolosa mosque in this repatriation process.

Like Yassir, many young Moroccans from modest families die on the street.
