Fuel Prices in Morocco Hit Record High as Diesel Surges Past 13 Dirhams

A bad surprise awaits Moroccan motorists at the pump starting this Wednesday. Fuel prices at service stations continue to soar.

Fuel prices are soaring again. Diesel will see its price increase by about 75 cents per liter to reach more than 13.30 dirhams, according to data collected from the National Federation of Owners, Merchants and Managers of Service Stations in Morocco (FNPCGS). As for the liter of gasoline, it will experience an increase of about 50 cents to reach 15 dirhams. This is the fourth increase for diesel and the second increase for gasoline in 15 days.

Until now, the price per liter of diesel in Casablanca is around 12.55 dirhams at Afriquia, 12.52 dirhams at Winxo stations, 12.58 dirhams at Shell outlets and 12.70 dirhams at Total. The liter of unleaded gasoline is sold at 14.45 dirhams at Afriquia, 14.50 dirhams at Shell stations, 14.65 dirhams at TotalEnergies and 14.51 dirhams at Winxo stations. The cost of transportation also influences the price of fuel in other cities of the kingdom, leading to price differences depending on the distance.

According to Mostafa Labrak, general manager of Energysium Consulting, the surge in pump prices in Morocco during the month of August is explained by the surge in Brent crude oil prices, which increased by about $14 between June and August of this year, going from $72 to $86, reports Le360. A situation that stems from the production cuts decided by the members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and other producing countries (OPEC+), "combined" with the increase in demand for petroleum products during the summer season.
