French Parliament Praises Morocco’s Political Stability Amid Regional Challenges

"Morocco represents a pole of political stability in the region," according to the French parliament.
In a study report on defense issues in the Mediterranean, published by the National Defense and Armed Forces Committee, French lawmakers praised the democracy and ongoing alternation in the kingdom, which have resulted, among other things, in "the smooth conduct of the September 2021 legislative elections".
However, the report notes, "economic and social tensions persist" as demonstrated by some demonstrations between 2016 and 2018. "The migratory pressure coming from Morocco as during the events of May 17, 2021 at the borders of the city of Ceuta illustrates these tensions," the report notes.
Regarding the Western Sahara, the deputies estimated that "the hostilities, mainly concentrated in the north of the territory near Mahbas, remain at this stage of low intensity."
Similarly, the rapporteurs explain, the diplomatic crisis between Morocco and Algeria remains limited to the conflict around the Sahara. "The risk of a transformation of the hostilities in the Western Sahara into a conventional conflict between state actors appears limited at this stage," they wrote.
