French MP M’jid El Guerrab Faces Criminal Trial for Violent Assault

MP M’jid El Guerrab will be prosecuted in criminal court by the Paris prosecutor’s office. This was decided in mid-December by the judicial authority against this LREM deputy, for having assaulted the PS official, Boris Faure, with two motorcycle helmet blows in 2017.
The violence of M’jid El Guerrab with a weapon, which led the victim to total incapacity to work for a week, constitutes an offense for which the defendant faces a sentence of up to three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros, reports the AFP. The prosecution, having established various identical testimonies on the extreme violence of the blows inflicted by M’jid El Guerrab, it now falls to the investigating judge in charge of the investigation to make the ultimate decision on the probable holding of a trial.
The facts date back to August 30, 2017, in Paris, where Boris Faure, then first secretary of the PS of the Federation of French Abroad, had received two helmet blows to the head from M’jid El Guerrab, LREM deputy for French people abroad. Boris Faure had to be operated on urgently that night, the medical expertise having proven that his vital prognosis had been engaged.
The departure, at the end of 2016, of M’jid El Guerrab, a French elected official of Moroccan origin, from the PS to the La République en Marche party, is at the root of the dispute that arose between the two men. "Mr. El Guerrab responded to a violence that was done to him. He deeply regrets it and he apologized to Mr. Faure, during the confrontation," reacted his lawyer Yassine Yakouti.
Faced with the strong controversy sparked by this case, M’jid El Guerrab resigned from the presidential party, without being able to leave, despite the insistent calls from his political camp, his parliamentary mandate that he was fulfilling.
