French Lawmaker to Lead Inquiry into Visa Policy Amid Rising Applications

Wednesday 8 January 2020, by Sylvanus

M’jid El Guerrab, member of parliament for the 9th constituency of French citizens living abroad (Maghreb and West Africa), has been appointed rapporteur of a parliamentary mission on French policy on the attribution of visas. The Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly has mandated this mission.

The deputy will have the prerogative to audit all the stakeholders involved in this issue (attribution of visas) whose number of applications is constantly increasing (visa applicants, visa application centers, ministries, consulates, prefectures, Campus France, Directes, OFII, universities, tour operators, etc.), indicates a press release cited by the Map.

According to M’jid El Guerrab, many French consular posts are currently experiencing great difficulties in scheduling simple appointments for filing visa applications. "Moreover, the attribution and duration of attribution sometimes seem irrational; which poses serious difficulties for our citizens who, for many, have family or close friends abroad," said the French deputy.

"This year again, in the context of university studies in France, some students still found themselves without a visa after the start of their school year," he said. The "number of entrepreneurs, economic driving forces, do not understand why there are still so many obstacles in the attribution of visas to come and create, produce or invest in France," M’Jid El Guerrab suggested. Hence the importance of the mission.
