French Lawmakers Urge Government to Regularize Undocumented Immigrants Amid COVID-19 Crisis

Wednesday 15 April 2020, by Bladi.net

French parliamentarians are calling on the government to regularize undocumented immigrants because of covid-19. There are about a hundred of them, including the Franco-Moroccan, M’jid El Guerrab, deputy for French citizens abroad. They have sent a letter to the government to notify them of their request.

The context of the health and economic crisis related to the coronavirus pandemic is not in favor of undocumented immigrants in France. This is what justifies the request for regularization of their situation by certain parliamentarians. They are a total of 104 French deputies from 10 political parties, demanding that the government regularize the situation of undocumented immigrants and the homeless in France. It is through a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Edouard Philippe, that they have expressed their request, reports the Journal du Dimanche on its website.

The objective of the French parliamentarians, including the Franco-Moroccan, M’jid El Guerrab, deputy for French citizens abroad, is to allow undocumented immigrants and the homeless in France to benefit from financial and health assistance, in this period of crisis due to the covid-19 pandemic. The signatories of the letter are asking the French government to be inspired by Portugal, which has proceeded to a provisional regularization of immigrants, to allow them to have access to care and financial aid.

The living conditions of undocumented immigrants and the homeless and their children are precarious. Faced with the covid-19 pandemic that is wreaking havoc, the parliamentarians are asking the French government to look into their case, by taking the same measures as Portugal. The government must act without delay and with full responsibility in the face of the consequences of the virus. For these deputies, the regularization of undocumented immigrants and the homeless will facilitate the care of the latter and improve the management of the covid-19 health crisis.
