French Grain Producers Offer to Fill Morocco’s Drought-Induced Cereal Shortage

Cereal production is down sharply due to drought. This is an opportunity quickly seized by French producers who say they are ready to make up for the deficit in the Moroccan market.
Morocco is one of the largest markets in the North Africa region, especially now that cereal production is stagnating due to the drought. At the Franco-Moroccan cereal meetings, which mark the start of the marketing campaign for French cereal producers, more than 40 French and European companies expressed their ability to meet the needs of the Moroccan market, reports the daily Les Inspirations Eco.
As the world’s fifth-largest producer and fourth-largest exporter of milling wheat, France intends to supply Morocco with nearly 5 million tons (Mt) of milling wheat, 600,000 tons of durum wheat, 500,000 tons of barley and more than 2.5 Mt of corn. Since the local need is significant, France will have to provide much more than usual, especially in milling wheat.
"French exports cover 60% of the wheat needs, to ensure one of the highest per capita consumption in the world (over 180 kg/inhabitant per year), but also to meet the need for corn and barley for animal feed," the newspaper reports.
