French Boxer Sofiane Oumiha Clinches Historic Third Amateur World Championship Title

The French of Moroccan origin Sofiane Oumiha added a third belt to his collection on Saturday, in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) by dominating the Cuban Erislandy Borges. He thus becomes the first French boxer to have his name inscribed three times in the Amateur World Championships.
After the two won in 2017 and 2021, Sofiane Oumiha, 28, obtained a third belt by beating the Cuban, Erislandy Borges, 22, in the under 60 kg category in Tashkent (Uzbekistan). "Sofiane had to deal with an opponent who, like the Russian in the semi-finals, set a very fast pace, but who was a bit less predictable than the Russian (Vsevolod Shumkov, bronze medalist at the Euro in the under 22s in 2021). Then experience prevailed. At first, I was a bit afraid that Sofiane would only counter on one blow. But from the second round on, he put together combinations," comments Mehdi Nichane, the national technical director, to Le Parisien.
With this third world title, the French of Moroccan origin becomes the first triple amateur world champion in French history. The International Boxing Association will give him a $200,000 (€182,000) bonus. A first among amateurs.
