French Baccalaureate Exams Modified Due to COVID-19 Distance Learning Challenges

Due to covid-19, face-to-face classes have been replaced by distance learning. Given the inequalities in following these courses, the government has announced that this year’s Baccalaureate exams will essentially cover only the face-to-face courses whose programs were stopped on March 14.

Through a press release published by the Ministry of National Education, candidates were informed about the "reference framework" for the Baccalaureate exams.

According to the same press release, this decision was made while the distance learning system, despite the multiplication of channels, did not achieve the expected results. Worse, it even widened the digital divide between social classes.

According to the latest note from the High Commission for Planning, 51% of households with children in primary school and 48% in secondary school had difficulty following distance learning due to lack of access channels. As for children from rural households, 55% of primary school children and 54% of secondary school children experienced the same difficulties.

As for poor households, 41% of households with children in secondary school and 29% in higher education, suffered from the insufficiency of these channels. In addition, lack of interest is also pointed out by 13% of households with primary school students, 11% with middle school students and 16% with secondary school students.
