French Ambassador Makes Landmark Visit to Moroccan Sahara

Christophe Lecourtier, the French ambassador to Morocco, is making a visit to the Sahara region. This trip, described as "historic" by many Moroccan media, began on November 11 and will end on November 13.
Accompanied by representatives from the Culture, Education and Economic sectors, the ambassador will visit Laâyoune and Dakhla.
This visit is in line with the French positions expressed by Emmanuel Macron during his recent official visit to Morocco. The objective is to meet with local inhabitants and authorities to better understand the issues and needs of the region. The French embassy wishes to identify how to support the economic and social development of the Moroccan Sahara.
In parallel with this trip, the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Morocco is organizing economic days in Laâyoune-Sakia el Hamra and Dakhla-Oued Eddahab. Around fifty French and Moroccan business leaders and decision-makers will participate.
This is the first visit of a French ambassador to the Sahara. Only the American ambassador David T. Fischer had made a similar trip to Dakhla in January 2021.
This diplomatic gesture follows the support provided by France for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco to resolve the Sahara conflict, a support reaffirmed during the official visit of Emmanuel Macron to Morocco last month.
