Franco-Moroccan Threatens Legal Action Over Casablanca Home Demolition

Faced with the insistence of the local authorities to demolish his four-story house located in the Derb Maizi neighborhood in Casablanca, a Franco-Moroccan threatens to take Morocco to court in France.

The four-story house of Abderrahmane Dahbi’s family located in the Derb Maizi neighborhood in Casablanca is among the dwellings that threaten to collapse and must be demolished as part of the implementation of the Royal Avenue project. But the family opposes the operation on the grounds that their house is in good condition and does not risk collapsing, according to an expert assessment. The authorities have offered the family an apartment not exceeding 50 square meters to vacate the house. This proposal does not receive Abderrahmane’s consent, as his family’s house has an estimated area of 106 square meters.

This Moroccan residing in France explained that the value of the house is much higher than the price proposed by the authorities, reports Alyaoum24. They have told him that the price per square meter of the house does not exceed 1,500 dirhams. His mother, the owner of the house, recounts that she built it with her husband sixty years ago and has spent her whole life there with her children and her deceased husband. Her son deplores the fact that the local authorities have not shown any courtesy in their dealings with him or his family. "I feel ashamed... The governor of the region, with the prefect, did not give us any time to vacate the house, in addition to the executors of their orders..." fumes the MRE, who announces that he will sue the Moroccan state.

"I’m thinking of filing a lawsuit in France, but I fear for the image of Morocco, unless a solution is found very soon," he adds. Abderrahmane could give up taking legal action if the Moroccan authorities find him a "dignified" solution: "We ask to leave the house with dignity and with an adequate rehousing solution".
