Franco-Moroccan Activist Opens Youth Education Center in Morocco to Combat School Dropout

Saturday 11 March 2023, by Sylvanus

The Franco-Moroccan activist Latifa Ibn Ziaten, mother of Imad, the first soldier assassinated in Toulouse by the terrorist Mohammed Merah on March 11, 2012, is inaugurating an IMAD educational center for Youth and Peace in Fnideq, in order to continue her fight for peace and to help young people.

"Since Covid, many children have left school in Morocco. So we will first try to recover these young people aged 10, 11, 12, and then there will be people of all ages. We will work with the local public schools. The center will be open from Monday to Saturday, from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm to guide the young people who have left school, support them and work with the parents," Latifa Ibn Ziaten told France info. Teachers, a psychologist, a lawyer, and a pharmacist will be involved. According to the Franco-Moroccan activist, they will carry out support missions: academic support, teaching French, English, remedial and computer courses, support for studies, towards a profession, etc.

"I see it with what I’ve been doing for years: we need to start people’s engines. They have the skills, but not the self-confidence. And we will pass on to them the values of the Kingdom (Morocco, editor’s note): humanity, peace and living together. We will also talk about the problem of terrorism, what I call "the sect". The goal is to tell parents to be attentive, because there is not enough dialogue at home. And maybe we’ll go further, Inshallah!" she added.

The IMAD Educational Center for Youth and Peace will be operational from September 2023. Registrations will begin as early as June. "We are going to try to support 1,000 students per year. I won’t be there much, but I might go down once a month and I’ll stay there for a few months when it starts. I financed the project, but I was greatly helped by the city of Fnideq and the workers. I’m very proud of this center," continues the mother of the late Imad. Her dream, she says, is to save this youth and reach out to them. "The world is beautiful, we have to make it even more beautiful!"
