Former Spanish Foreign Minister Urges EU to Reassess Western Sahara Stance

Europe must make a realistic decision on the Sahara issue. This is what the former Spanish Foreign Minister, Ana Palacio, demands in an op-ed after the American recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
"The time bomb of Western Sahara" is the title of this op-ed published on the "Projetcsyndicate" platform in which Ana Palacio has unpicked the separatist statements of the Polisario, laying bare its contradictions.
According to the former diplomat, the separatist front has long been trying to win over international public opinion with an unfair discourse that presents Morocco as an occupier, with Brahim Ghali, accused of holding Sahrawi refugees hostage. The author accuses the separatist front of judicializing the Sahara issue before international courts, contesting the agreements signed by Morocco with the European Union and other countries.
"None of the 69 UN Security Council resolutions on Western Sahara refer to the occupation," sweeps away Ana Palacio, hammering that the qualification of occupation does not exist in international law.
With the support of Algeria, the Polisario has never ceased to seize the European Court of Justice in order to abrogate the fisheries agreement. In vain, writes the former Spanish diplomat who notes that meanwhile, Morocco remains unwavering in its intimate conviction of its historical and inalienable right over the Sahara.
