Former Soccer Prodigy Hachim Mastour Reveals Struggle with Depression

Former football prodigy, Moroccan international Hachim Mastour, 25, who plays as a winger or attacking midfielder for Union Touarga in the Moroccan first division, is going through a deep phase of depression.

On Wednesday, Hachim Mastour posted a rather disturbing message on his social media. "I’m sad, I don’t feel well. I’m tired of fighting every day to receive humiliations. I’ve been feeling this way for years and in silence I try to move forward. I hate talking about how I feel, but that’s the situation. I’ve always tried to find my place, but I’ve never found it," writes the Moroccan international in an Instagram story.

He who was considered a football prodigy at just 15 years old has not been able to have a great career. He had regretted having trusted certain people in his entourage. "I regret having trusted the wrong people, people who told me they were going to ruin me, that they would tarnish my name to the point that I could never play football again. They saw me as a cash machine, a machine to squeeze. I also want to remind them that before being a footballer, I’m a simple boy, like everyone else," he had confided to the Italian media PSB in 2022.

The former AC Milan player had also confessed to having had trouble handling the pressures, especially that of the public. "Every time I step onto the field, most people expect me to take the ball, dribble past everyone and go to the goal with the ball," he had lamented, before "complaining about the "gratuitous offenses suffered on social networks".

Mastour is also marked by his stint at Reggina. "I was honored to be able to play in an important square like Reggio. To be able to dialogue on the field with players of the caliber of Crisetig, Menez, Denis, was something fabulous that could allow me to highlight my technical qualities. Unfortunately, however, the results were slow in coming and the technical choice fell on players with other characteristics," he had confided.
