Former Obama Advisor: Trump’s Western Sahara Decision Undermines Peace Process

The American recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara continues to provoke reactions. Robert Malley, president of the International Crisis Group, also a former adviser to US presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, says this decision "has a negative impact on this Sahara file".
"The recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in exchange for normalization between Morocco and Israel makes no sense, and it has a negative impact on this Western Sahara file," he said in an interview with France Culture. According to the expert, former US President Donald Trump "distinguished himself by his policy of barter, a kind of permanent bargaining where transactions are made not on the level of values but on the level of material interests".
"He was therefore able to do a lot of harm simply because he favored what is to his personal benefit, to the benefit of all those around him, in contempt of all the values, norms, international alliances of the United States, of stability throughout the world," added Mr. Malley.
