Former Moroccan MP Sentenced to 8 Years for Drug Trafficking

Prosecuted in particular for "participation in the possession of a narcotic substance and export of drugs without a permit or license from the customs administration", a former MP from the National Rally of Independents (RNI) was sentenced to eight years in prison and a fine of 100,000 DH by the court of first instance in Zagora.
In addition to the former MP, two accomplices were sentenced to seven years in prison and a fine of 50,000 DH each, reports the Arabic-language daily Assabah. As for the brother of the former MP, the president of a rural commune in the province of Taounate and the other person involved in this case, they were acquitted by the court of first instance in Zagora.
The five defendants on trial were implicated in a case that began in January 2019. It involves the seizure of a truck transporting large quantities of narcotics, 1.2 tons of cannabis resin. The former RNI deputy and his brother were prosecuted under arrest and placed in pre-trial detention in the local prison in Zagora. All five defendants were prosecuted for possession, trafficking and transport of narcotics, participation in the possession of a narcotic substance and export of drugs without a permit or license from the customs administration.
