Former Moroccan Mayor’s Decade-Long Luxury Villa Rental Scandal Exposed

A former president of the Saïdia commune has treated himself to a luxurious villa that he rents for 200 DH per month. This situation, which has prevailed for about ten years, has never been the subject of a review of the rental value.
This municipal property is located on Boulevard Mohammed V, not far from the beach of the same commune in Berkane, reports Assabah. According to the same source, the president of the commune personally signed the lease while he was still in office, in violation of the organic law governing local governance.
If his successors have not denounced this scandal for about ten years, the cat was let out of the bag by civil society actors. They denounced this scandal, which they consider to be an abuse of power, influence peddling and the squandering of public funds.
For a villa whose rental value is estimated at 30,000 euros per month, the former president of the commune, Hassan Benmoumen, has only paid 22,400 dirhams since 2010. According to civil society actors, several civil servants live in luxurious villas without paying water or electricity bills.
