Forbes Ranks Two Moroccan Billionaires Among Africa’s Wealthiest

Two Moroccans are featured in the 36th annual ranking of the largest African fortunes by the American economic magazine Forbes, released in early February.
Aziz Akhannouch, 61, and Othmane Benjelloun, 89, remain the two Moroccans present in the top 19 of the largest African fortunes. With an estimated fortune of $1.5 billion at the end of 2022, lower than his estimated fortune in 2021 ($2.2 billion), the former occupies the 13th place on the Forbes list. The current head of government, who has "withdrawn from any management of the family holding company", "holds interests in oil, gas and chemicals through the listed companies Afriquia Gaz and Maghreb Oxygène", as majority owner of the Akwa group.
The second loses one place compared to 2021 and ranks 16th on the list of the largest African fortunes. His fortune is estimated at $1.3 billion, also lower than the estimated fortune in 2020. Othmane Benjelloun, CEO of BMCE (Bank Of Africa), is positioned at the 2245th place in the global ranking. Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote remains undefeatable. With $13.5 billion, he has been at the top of the ranking of the richest men in the continent for the 12th consecutive year.
Morocco has two billionaires, three for Nigeria, six for South Africa and five for Egypt, one for Algeria and one for Zimbabwe.
