Food Poisoning Outbreak in Marrakech Restaurant Leaves 2 Dead, 24 Ill; Safety Office Under Scrutiny

Activists have reminded the competent authorities of their duty to protect Moroccans from the risks of food poisoning. This, after several people were admitted to the emergency room of the Mohammed VI hospital in Marrakech following the consumption of spoiled food in a restaurant located in Mhamid.
The National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) is doing what is within its power to protect consumers. Its role is limited to carrying out inspection missions in food industry units and issuing licenses to them based on the reports of the competent committee, explains a responsible of the Office to Kech24.
ONSSA also carries out unannounced checks in these units. On these occasions, it emphasizes compliance with hygiene, quality standards, etc., adds the official, specifying that in case of non-compliance observed, the license granted to these units is suspended or even withdrawn. However, the Office is not authorized to order the closure of restaurants, fast-food or "mahlabat", this prerogative being devolved to the municipal health offices.
ONSSA also plays its part by giving its opinions in the mixed commissions placed under the supervision of the local authorities and the governor of the district. These commissions carry out surveillance missions according to a program established by the services of the prefecture.
