Floods in Spain: the toll worsens for Moroccan expatriates

A second death has been confirmed among Moroccan nationals in Spain, bringing to two the number of victims among Moroccans, following the devastating floods that hit the south and east of the country. The Consul General of Morocco in Valencia, Saïd El Idrissi Bouzidi, announced this new death, while the search continues to find 45 missing Moroccans.
Faced with this tragedy, Morocco is mobilizing. A "crisis cell" has been set up by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to monitor the situation and provide support to Moroccan nationals affected by the disaster. In coordination with the Spanish authorities, this cell is deployed on the ground to take stock of the victims and assist the victims. Two telephone numbers have also been set up to report disappearances and support families.
These floods, the worst that Spain has experienced in decades, have caused the death of 211 people. It should be remembered that the Moroccan community represents the largest foreign community in Spain, with nearly one million nationals.
King Mohammed VI sent a message of condolences to the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, expressing Morocco’s solidarity. The Moroccan Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, offered his Spanish counterpart, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, to send rescue teams and humanitarian aid.
