FIFA President Sparks Controversy with Morocco Jersey Photo Amid World Cup Hosting Rivalry

A recent Instagram post by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, wearing the Moroccan jersey, has caused a stir in the Algerian press. Many media outlets have pointed to an apparent preference of the official for Morocco, and have seen a lack of impartiality in it.
This photo was very well received by the supporters of the Atlas Lions, delighted to see the boss of world football salute the historic performance of their team at the 2022 World Cup.

The fact that this image was shared in the middle of the competition between Morocco and Algeria for the organization of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has exacerbated tensions. The two countries see the event as an opportunity for prestige and recognition. Certain Algerian media have in particular underlined the supposed "proximity" between Infantino and Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).
This presumed privileged relationship is viewed in a bad light in Algeria, while the country also aspires to host the continental tournament. Lekjaa’s recent statements, claiming that the Fez stadium would be ready to host the 2025 CAN as soon as Morocco was chosen as the host, have particularly sparked controversy. For many Algerian observers, these remarks show that the decision of the Confederation of African Football is already settled.
