Fez Tourism Plummets 77% in 2020 Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The year 2020 was not at all prosperous for the tourism sector, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In Fez, tourist nights in classified accommodation establishments fell by 77%, compared to 2019, according to statistical data from the National Tourism Observatory (ONT).
In total, 253,856 overnight stays were recorded during the year 2020, compared to 1,117,579 overnight stays in 2019. As for arrivals in classified hotels, they were estimated at 129,092 in 2020, compared to 592,765 in 2019, a decrease of 78%.
As for the average length of stay, it was two days in 2020 as in 2019, the ONT specifies. This decline is mainly due to the drop recorded by the main source markets, including France, the USA, Germany, China, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan.
Just during the month of December last year, the classified accommodation establishments in the city of Fez experienced a 79% drop compared to 2019, with 19,346 overnight stays. The number of operational rooms during this period was 1,828 units, including 544 of 5-star category, 531 of 4-star and 517 of 3-star, the Observatory points out.
