Morocco Expands Fez Airport Ahead of 2030 World Cup Co-Hosting

Morocco is working on the extension of Fez-Saïss airport in anticipation of the 2030 World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

The Fez-Saïss airport is about to undergo a transformation. The National Airports Office (ONDA) launched a consultation on Friday for the realization of the architectural studies and the monitoring of the extension and renovation works, in order to equip the Fez-Saïss airport with the necessary infrastructure and equipment to ensure optimal management of its air activity. The project includes a passenger terminal of approximately 46,000 m², including the extension, which will consist of two levels. Spread over an area of 13,590 m², the basement level will house the baggage sorting system, technical rooms, baggage sorting support rooms, of which 6,645 m² already exist, and 6,945 m² dedicated to the extension.

As for the ground floor, it will be spread over an area of 32,150 m² (of which 13,900 m² are already present). 11,500 m² are intended for the extension while 4,930 m² are to be demolished and rebuilt. This component will house a departure and arrival hall, check-in counters, an international and domestic security checkpoint (PIF), company and subcontractor offices, ground handling offices, an international and domestic departure control (emigration and immigration), international and domestic boarding lounges, a health control, a baggage delivery room and customs control.

Morocco’s ambition is to increase the capacity of all its airports to 80 million passengers per year by 2035, instead of the current 40 million. To achieve this, the kingdom has launched various extension and renovation projects for the airports of Marrakech, Tangier and Agadir. These projects are also part of Morocco’s preparations for the organization of the 2030 World Cup together with Spain and Portugal.
