Ferry Prices Spark Concern Among Moroccan Diaspora Ahead of Annual Return

The controversy over ticket prices resurfaces as this year’s Operation Marhaba approaches. Moroccans residing abroad (MRE) warn of an unjustified price increase in Morocco.
Moroccans from the diaspora fear an exaggerated increase in ferry ticket prices between Spanish and Moroccan ports, particularly between Tarifa and Tangier-Med and Tangier-city. They dread unjustified and widespread increases in ticket prices, as was the case last year in Morocco, emphasizing that the kingdom does not have a national shipping company and does not derive any economic benefit from this massive flow to its ports.
Members of parliament have questioned the government about the reasons that would justify this surge in ferry ticket prices, particularly for the Tangier-Algeciras line. In response, it was stated that the increase in ticket prices was due to global inflation, assuring that they had urged companies to lower their prices. Following this call, some companies have applied discounts of up to 20%, or about 1,000 dirhams. But this promotional offer does not seem to be enough to reassure the MRE.
Operation Marhaba takes place between June 15 and September 15 each year. It allows Moroccans from Europe to reach their country of origin via Andalusian ports to spend their summer holidays.
