Fatal Crash on Spanish Highway Involving Moroccan Travelers Leaves 1 Dead, 40 Injured

A serious traffic accident occurred on Sunday on the A-92 motorway, near Moraleda de Zafayona (Granada). Two buses transporting Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) and a vehicle tried to avoid an animal that had entered the lane. The result, one dead and about forty injured.

Among the estimated 35 injured, three men were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Virgen de las Nieves hospital in Granada, two of whom are recovering normally. Three minors were also hospitalized, with only one remaining in care at the pediatric unit of the San Cecilio clinic, where a 70-year-old woman was operated on Sunday, according to health sources at Europa Press.

The accident occurred on the A-92 heading towards Malaga. The car driver said he braked sharply to avoid an animal that had entered the highway. He tested negative for alcohol and drugs, according to Civil Guard sources. The deceased person is one of the bus drivers. The three vehicles were heading to Algeciras to join Morocco as part of the Marhaba Operation. The driver of the second bus also tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

The director of the provincial service of Granada, Eladio Gil, thanked the various units that helped locate and transfer the accident victims, stressing the importance of conducting simulation exercises for the care of multiple victims and to refine emergency plans against seismic risks.

Of the 35 injured, there are 10 serious cases treated in the intensive care units of the region’s reference hospitals. All less serious injuries were urgently transferred to hospitals in less than two hours. The remaining 70 passengers in the two buses were accommodated at the El Cruce de Moraleda hotel, located near the accident site. They were assisted by a team of nurses.
