Far-Right Vox Party Alleges Fraud in Spanish Citizenship Process for Moroccans

The far-right party Vox has asked for the appearance before Congress of the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, to understand the "fraud system" in the granting of Spanish nationality to Moroccans who, they denounce, do not renounce their nationality of origin beforehand.
Vox has addressed a series of questions to the government on this subject and has even requested access to the data and documents concerning this "fraud". For the deputies of Santiago Abascal’s party, the fact that Moroccan citizens do not renounce their nationality of origin when obtaining Spanish nationality constitutes a violation of Article 23.b of the Civil Code. According to the data put forward by Vox, more than 202,000 people, including 59,212 of Moroccan origin, obtained Spanish nationality by residence in 2021.
The far-right party denounces "frauds in the process of granting nationality" as well as the "lack of transparency of the government" which, according to Vox, is "unable to ask Morocco for the data that would allow this "fraud" to be uncovered". In addition to the appearance of Grande-Marlaska before the Interior Commission of the Lower House, Vox also wants to know the number of Moroccan citizens, by province of residence, who have acquired Spanish nationality during the XIV legislature, with proof of renunciation of their previous nationality.
In its questions to the government, Vox asked if it is aware of the "fraud" in the granting of nationality to Moroccans and how it ensures compliance with the requirement provided for in Article 23.b of the Civil Code. The party of Santiago Abascal also wants to know if the renunciation of nationality is communicated to the country of origin and if so, by what means. In other words, how the government verifies and controls the effectiveness of the renunciation of the nationality of origin. These frauds in the acquisition of Spanish nationality do not only concern Moroccans, assures Vox, who specifies that Cubans, Chileans, Bolivians and Venezuelans are also affected.
