Families Urge Morocco to Repatriate Women Detained in Syrian Camp

The executive office of the National Coordination of Families of Persons Blocked in Syria and Iraq strongly condemned the inhumane and degrading treatment suffered by Moroccan women detained in the Al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria, urging the Moroccan authorities to work for their repatriation to Morocco as soon as possible.

The Moroccan women detained for nearly seven years in this Syrian camp lack the minimum to live with dignity. Even water is sold to them, denounces an anonymous source from the coordination, adding that "medicines are not available in the camp, which exposes its occupants to permanent danger, not to mention the impossibility of obtaining medical consultation." And to wonder: What has been done with the remains of those who died from COVID-19 or tuberculosis?

In a statement to Madar21, the same source explains that the lack of information on the burial sites of the Moroccan women who died in this camp reinforces suspicions of organ trafficking. Similarly, the Kurds demand large sums of money, up to 100,000 dirhams per person, before allowing them to see a doctor. "These are Kurdish gangs that facilitate these operations, and recently five children, including two Moroccans, left the camp and are now in Turkey," the same source informs.

According to the coordination, the repatriation of Moroccan women detained in the camps in Syria and Iraq should not take place until the 2030 World Cup. A distant deadline for the families of these women who have written letters to the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Justice and Interior to ask them to act for the return of the latter. Without success. The coordination has warned against a worsening of the situation in the Syrian and Iraqi camps, urging the Moroccan authorities to play their part in guaranteeing the rights of these Moroccan women and their children and facilitating their return and social reintegration.

The coordination also called on the international community, human rights organizations and the United Nations to take their responsibilities and work for the immediate release of these detainees. It also requested the provision of emergency aid to protect the lives of the detainees and their children from the effects of the floods that have affected the Al-Hol camp and mobilization to facilitate their safe and dignified return to Morocco.
