UK Faces Tomato Shortage as Moroccan Supply Chain Disrupted

Problems related to tomato production in Morocco have led to a shortage in the United Kingdom. As a result, supermarkets are struggling to meet strong consumer demand.
Consumers have started to notice tomato shortages for several weeks now. According to retailers, a combination of bad weather conditions and transportation problems in North Africa and Europe was the cause of significant supply problems, reports the Daily Mail website. Production problems in Morocco began in January. Abnormally cold night temperatures affected tomato ripening.

To cope with the shortage, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl supermarkets had to limit purchases of peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers to three items per person. As for Morrisons, the fourth largest supermarket chain in the UK, it has set a ceiling of two items per customer for tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and peppers.
