Expert: Morocco’s Anti-Extremism Strategy Outpaces US and EU Efforts

American expert on terrorism-related issues Ido Levy, associate researcher at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, believes that Morocco’s efforts in the fight against extremism are more comprehensive than most programs implemented in the United States and the European Union (EU).
In a statement to MAP on the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of the Throne Festival, the American expert said that Morocco is at the forefront of the fight against violent extremism, thanks to a proactive and multidimensional approach. In the fight against violent extremism, Morocco has put in place a proactive strategy that is not limited to a solid security and intelligence approach alone, but also involves the fields of education and religion, he noted, citing the "Moussalaha" (Reconciliation) program developed in 2017 by the General Delegation of Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR), in cooperation with the Rabita Mohammadia of Ulema, the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) and specialized experts. A program aimed at "reconciling" radicalized detainees with society.
Ido Levy also praised the efforts of the Rabita Mohammadia of Ulema, a Moroccan public interest association created by King Mohammed VI in 2006, whose mission is to promote a tolerant and open Islam. The latter has closely examined how to communicate with Moroccan youth through social media, video games and comics, in addition to the more traditional methods of classes in schools and mosques, he observed.
