Evra Reveals Death Threats Following 2011 Racist Incident with Suarez

Former Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra said on Monday that he had received death threats in 2011, after the racist insults that former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez had directed at him.
"Manchester United received so many threatening letters about me," says the Frenchman Patrice Evra, in a podcast broadcast by the Mancunian club.
In 2011, the English Football Association had suspended the Uruguayan, Luis Suarez, found guilty of "misconduct" towards Evra. The former Liverpool striker had hurled racist insults at the Frenchman during a confrontation between the two rival English football clubs.
At the time, Liverpool had publicly defended their player; which had exacerbated the tensions between the two teams. The worst part is that the Frenchman had been targeted by some fans of the opposing team.
Some said: "We are in prison, we are Liverpool fans. When we get out, we will kill you and your family," Patrice Evra recounts. Faced with these threats, bodyguards had to ensure the protection of the former French defender of Manchester United. "They slept in front of my house. Wherever I went, there were security measures surrounding me," he says.
"I didn’t understand why people hated me so much. They didn’t know the truth. [...] It was a difficult time, but I wasn’t afraid. My family, my wife, my brother were afraid, but not me," he says.
