Europe Urged to Follow US Lead on Western Sahara Autonomy Plan

Following the recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, several countries have welcomed this initiative and reiterated their support for Morocco. More than a month after this historic decision, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita has invited Europe to "get out of its comfort zone" and "follow the dynamics of the United States.
Present at the virtual conference, organized this Friday, and which brought together 40 countries on the subject of support for the Moroccan proposal for autonomy of the Saharan provinces, under Moroccan sovereignty, the head of Moroccan diplomacy did not mince his words towards Europe: "a part of Europe must be more daring, because it is close to this conflict, and get out of its comfort".
According to Mr. Bourita, the orientation [of part of Europe, Ed.] should go in the direction of autonomy, and autonomy alone. In his view, the Old Continent must "get out of its comfort, the comfort of saying that there is a process, we support a process, even if it has to last for decades."
He also called on Europe to "be in the international dynamic". "For 20 years, US administrations have supported the credible and serious autonomy project," the Foreign Minister recalled.
Silent since this historic decision, Spain, a "reliable partner for a long time" of Morocco, has stood out by its absence.
