Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha Breaks Indoor Mile World Record, Surpassing El Guerrouj’s 20-Year Mark

A few days after losing the indoor world record in the 1,500m, Moroccan champion Hicham El Guerrouj has just laid down his arms for the mile record, also indoors.
At a meeting held last night in Boston, United States, young Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha has toppled the mile record in 3 min 47 sec 01/100, or one second better than El Guerrouj’s record set in 1999 (3 min 48 sec and 45/100).
At only 21 years old, he had already tried to beat the Moroccan’s record a few weeks ago before failing by one second. Today, then, it’s done with a record validated by the International Athletics Federation.
On February 16, Ethiopian Samuel Tefera had shattered the Moroccan’s indoor 1,500m record set more than 20 years ago.
Kejelcha’s next challenge, the very symbolic 1,500m in 3m26 and 0 seconds. At the rate it’s going, the Ethiopian should try to shatter it before the summer and the start of the meetings in Europe. Who wants to bet?
