Ethiopian Teen Shatters 22-Year-Old Indoor 1,500m World Record

Twelve years after ending his career and 22 years after his world record in the 1,500 meters indoor distance, the Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj has just lost it, this evening, in Great Britain.
Author of the world’s best performance in the 1,500 meters (indoor) in 3 minutes 31 seconds 18/100, the Moroccan lost it tonight in favor of the Ethiopian Samuel Tefera, who just achieved a time of 3m31 and 04/100, or 14 hundredths of a second better than the Moroccan champion.
At only 19 years old, the Ethiopian beat his compatriot Yomif Kejelcha who covered the distance in 3 minutes 31 seconds 31/100, or just a few hundredths more than the Moroccan. The latter had last week been on the verge of breaking another Moroccan record, that of the Mile.
Hicham El Guerrouj remains the undisputed holder of the 1,500 meters record with a time of 3 minutes 26 seconds, a time that will probably be hard to reach but at only 19 years old, Samuel Tefera still has many years of progress ahead of him.
