Having entered Sebta in July, seven Moroccans then try to reach Spain… by kayak
Seven Moroccans who entered Sebta during the mass crossings in July tried to continue their journey to mainland Spain. They were intercepted at sea while travelling seven to a pair of kayaks.
The Guardia Civil spotted them shortly before midnight off Benzú, in northern Sebta. The seven men were heading for the coast of Cadiz: four had boarded one kayak and three the other, reports laSexta.
All are Moroccan and adults. They had entered Sebta on 30 and 31 July, during the mass crossings that overwhelmed the border with Morocco.

The operation began when the Guardia Civil’s maritime service noticed suspicious movements near Benzú beach. Officers then discovered the two vessels already out in the strait. The Guardia Civil stressed the danger of the crossing, given the fragility of the kayaks and the number of passengers on board.
Departures from Sebta on the rise
This attempt comes as clandestine crossings from Sebta to Cadiz and Malaga are increasing. Migrants who remain in the city use pleasure boats, inflatable dinghies and kayaks to try to cover the roughly 29 kilometres separating Sebta from the peninsula.
In just over 48 hours, 59 people were caught attempting to put to sea. The Guardia Civil has stepped up surveillance around Benzú, Calamocarro, San Amaro and Santa Catalina, which have become the main departure points.

The seven men intercepted on Sunday had therefore crossed one border in late July, but were still separated from mainland Spain by the strait. Their attempt ended off Benzú, before they could get far from Sebta.
