Eid al-Adha: Sheep Prices Remain Stable in Moroccan Markets

Several sellers and sheep farming professionals have told Médias24 that sheep prices negotiated on the markets are at quite reasonable levels.

"On the reference markets, the price of a "Timahdit" breed sheep varies between 46 and 47 DH per kilo. The price of "Bni Guil" and "Sardi" is on average 51 DH per kilo. Overall, sheep prices, all breeds combined, are between 47 and 52 DH per kilo," says Abderrahmane Mejdoubi, president of the National Sheep and Goat Association (ANOC).

These same prices are practiced by a large retail chain in Casablanca. Prices range from 47 DH for the "Timahdit" breed to 51 DH for the "Sardi" breed. According to the same source, a merchant encountered on the spot confirmed: "Prices have remained almost at the same level as last year".

As for merchants who do not sell sheep by the kilo, the president said that "on the Aïn Bni Mathar market, in the Oriental region, for example, which is a benchmark market", "prices ranged between 1,500 DH and 7,000 DH. Per kilo, it is an average of 48 DH".

For now, the sheep market is favorable. The presence of Moroccans living abroad, who will celebrate Eid al-Adha with their families and loved ones, could increase demand, which would meet supply. But "there will be no tension around supply or prices," reassures Abderrahmane Mejdoubi.
