Egyptian Star Ruby’s Mawazine Debut Sparks Outrage: Playback Performance Disappoints Moroccan Fans

The Egyptian singer Ruby performed on Friday evening on the Nahda stage in Rabat as part of the "Mawazine Rythmes du Monde" Festival. A "disappointing" performance that sparked a wave of criticism on social media.
Ruby did not conquer the Moroccan public during her very first concert at the Mawazine Festival. Moroccans were numerous in expressing their "disappointment" with the artistic performance of the Egyptian artist, considered "more spectacular than musical". The public felt that Ruby did not meet their expectations, blaming her for spending her time performing in playback instead of igniting the stage with live performance.
The comments poured in on social media following this controversial performance by the Egyptian artist. For Moroccan internet users, the choice of playback for a first artistic appearance in Morocco constitutes a "contempt for the public of a prestigious festival like Mawazine".
While some Moroccans criticized Ruby’s clothing, which they found "bold and inappropriate", as well as her dance steps deemed "provocative", others, on the other hand, recognized the artist’s "freedom in her artistic expression and the choice of her performance style".
Others also considered that the performance of the Egyptian artist "is not worthy of an international festival that celebrates cultural diversity", criticizing what they described as "promoting an attractive image to the detriment of the quality of the musical performance". Some internet users have invited the organizers of the "Mawazine" festival to take into account the taste of the Moroccan public in the selection of the artists.
