Egg Prices Soar in Morocco, Sparking Concerns Ahead of Ramadan

For a few months, the price of eggs has been rising sharply in Morocco. Consumers fear that the price will reach new heights as Ramadan approaches, a period when egg consumption soars.
The price of eggs continues to skyrocket to the dismay of consumers. It is difficult to return to its usual price (1 dirham). Many of these consumers are struggling to buy this protein-rich food consumed in the morning for breakfast and used in various types of desserts and dishes. Currently, the price of eggs is one and a half dirhams. Sold at 1.75 dirhams in certain regions of the kingdom, the egg is more expensive in Morocco than in Europe.
Professionals attribute this surge to the drop in production, resulting from the losses suffered by producers since the Covid-19 pandemic and the rise in animal feed prices. Many egg merchants point the finger at the large producers who own large farms. According to them, they have started to control the market and, consequently, the prices of eggs.
Another cause mentioned: the drop in animal feed prices was not accompanied by a drop in egg prices. This is explained by the producers’ desire to offset the losses they suffered during the confinement period. Yet the State had granted around two billion dirhams to the poultry sector to revive it.
