EasyJet Considers Cutting Moroccan Routes Amid COVID-19 Network Optimization

Faced with the impact of the health crisis on EasyJet, the company’s management is developing an optimization plan for the network that provides for the elimination of a third of British jobs and the closure of two bases in London and Newcastle. Will the links to Morocco be suspended?
EasyJet operates flights to Marrakech, Casablanca, Agadir and Fez. These routes could also be affected by the network optimization plan. Insofar as the Moroccan air transport is also severely affected by the health crisis related to Covid-19.
The British low-cost specialist has timidly resumed its activities in mid-June. The company intends to operate on 75% of its network by the end of August, with 30% of the initially planned capacity, reports Air Journal. EasyJet is discussing with unions on the "possibility of a 30% reduction in its workforce", and the optimization of its network and its bases - those of London-Stansted, London-Southend and Newcastle due to a loss of 353 million pounds recorded in the first half of the year.
"These are very difficult proposals to make, in an unprecedented and difficult period for the airline and the industry as a whole. We are focusing on what is good for the business, its health and long-term success in order to protect jobs in the future. Unfortunately, the lower demand environment means we need fewer planes and have fewer job opportunities for our employees," said Johan Lundgren, CEO of EasyJet.
These proposals "are not a reflection of our Stansted, Southend and Newcastle employees, who have all worked tirelessly and are fully committed to providing excellent service to our customers," he added.
EasyJet manages 11 bases with 163 Airbus in the UK. The company offers 546 routes there and transports more than 52 million passengers each year.
