EasyJet to Close 3 UK Bases and Cut Morocco Routes Amid Travel Slump

The airline EasyJet decided on Monday to close three British bases (London-Stansted, London-Southend and Newcastle) and several routes, including those to Morocco, starting in September.
These bases will be closed on the evening of August 31, 2020, reports Air Journal. EasyJet intends to contact affected passengers in the coming days to offer them "travel options". This includes transferring to another flight free of charge (with the exception of a few countries including Morocco), refunding the plane ticket, a 12-month credit voucher or a refund under certain conditions if an alternative mode of travel is chosen (train, boat, etc.).
"We understand the uncertainty this may cause for our customers traveling to and from these airports," and "we apologize to customers for any inconvenience this may cause," the low-cost airline said in its press release.
"We have had to take the very difficult decision to close three UK bases due to the unprecedented impact of the pandemic and associated travel restrictions, exacerbated by quarantine measures in the UK which are impacting travel demand," explained Johan Lundgren, CEO of EasyJet.
He assures that he has worked closely with the company’s employee representatives. "I am pleased that we have been able to identify ways to significantly reduce the number of proposed compulsory redundancies (…). I know this is a very difficult time for our pilots and cabin crew, and I want to thank them for their continued professionalism," he added.
