Dutch Super Cup Eyes Potential Move to Morocco, Following European Trend

The Netherlands could be tempted by the idea of exporting the Johan Cruyff Schaal to Moroccan soil. The wish was expressed by a Dutch expert in sports marketing, who sees no objection to Morocco being chosen for such a sporting experience.

For several years now, some European countries have been relocating their Super Cups to other continents. This remains a very popular sporting and human experience. For its Trophée des Champions, France has been traveling to other countries, even African ones, for 10 years. The Italians, who started exporting in 1993, have been based in Saudi Arabia for two seasons, after passing through Qatar and China. After a first foray outside Europe in 2018, in Tangier more precisely, the Spanish Super Cup has also found refuge in the Gulf Kingdom, and this until 2022. The Real vs Atlético final, which takes place on Sunday, is a tangible example, reports Le 360.

In any case, it has become the fashion in the sports world. This is why Chris Woerts, a sports marketing expert, is campaigning for the Netherlands to relocate their Super Cup: "We all complain that the Eredivisie doesn’t count internationally. But without looking further. Our Super Cup is played at the end of the summer and the stands are not full. We have to see this competition as a way to promote our football abroad. You can generate profits where you are visible," explains the Dutchman to the local media, Algemeen Dagblad, cited by the same source.

For the former commercial director of the local championship, this wish should be encouraged and promoted. "If you organize a match where Hakim Ziyech and Mohamed Ihattaren face each other, why wouldn’t it work?" he declares before adding that he had received, a few years ago, an offer from a Moroccan agent to play the Super Cup there. "Unfortunately, the clubs didn’t follow, it’s shameful. We have to stop looking at our own navel," he concludes.
