Dutch Rider Dies from Heatstroke in Morocco Desert Challenge, Second Fatality in Race

Dutch rider Bram van der Wouden died at the age of 43 from heatstroke while participating in the fifth stage of the Morocco Desert Challenge 2023. His death comes a day after that of Laurent Lichtleuchter, Patrice Garrouste’s co-driver, killed in an accident on Wednesday during the fourth stage.
The lifeless body of Bram van del Wouden was found near his motorcycle. By participating in the Morocco Desert Challenge, he wanted to prepare for his participation in the 2024 Dakar Rally, after missing last year’s edition. In 2022, he had broken a rib and ended up abandoning this competition. The Morocco Desert Challenge was one of the goals he had set himself to complete his preparation for this Rally, which is why he chose to compete in Morocco with his custom-made Sherco in the Malle Moto category, that is to say without any assistance or help.
The organization of the Morocco Desert Challenge confirmed the death of the Dutchman. "Today, Thursday, April 27, 2023, death has struck again. The Dutch motorcyclist Bram van der Wouden, aged 48, succumbed to heat and exhaustion. Other participants found him lying next to his motorcycle. Bram probably stopped to rest. The medical intervention team arrived very quickly, but they could do nothing. Once again, the world of rally-raid loses a dear friend," it said in a statement.
Bram van der Wouden was participating in his first Morocco Desert Challenge. He had already participated in several rallies such as Heroes Legend, Breslau rally and Africa Eco Race. The tournament organization extended its deepest condolences to his wife and daughters.
